Questions & Answers

How do I start?
The first step ring or email Sara at Tracing Your Roots in total confidence and we will discuss your individual search and figure out the best way forward. We have a very successful track record when it comes to tracing people from all parts of the UK, however every search is very different and we are careful not to make make promises we cannot keep.

What do I need to provide you with?
The more information we have about your family the quicker we can begin the search and the more certain we can be that we have found the right person. Just send all information you already know about your family via email or post .We don’t need originals, photocopies will be fine. Try and provide us with everything you know. Obvious information like full name, married name, date of birth and places you know they have lived or worked and if know the names of relatives this also helps.

How often do you get in touch?
We will stay in touch with you throughout the process and keep you informed when new information comes to light or if we hit dead ends. Throughout the search we try to keep in touch as soon as we have information or we need to buy a certificate from the General Registry Office (GRO).

How soon will I get results?
Generally we get results back in a few weeks, though occasionally searches can take a year or more. This is why we stress the fact that every search is different. We quite often need to contact the GRO to buy Birth, Marriage and Death certificates and this can add several weeks to the search. Common names like Smith and Jones do take time to unravel so patience is needed.

How are the results sent to me?

You choose how you would like to find out the results. They can be emailed or posted, or if you prefer we will ring you and tell you what we have found. We understand that this can be a very emotional time for you and take care to handle every search with utmost sensitivity to your needs. This is especially the case when results are not what you expected.
We never make any contact with the person you are trying to trace. All our work is carried out within the law and we are CRB enhanced checked and fully compliant with data protection.

What happens if I want to contact the person?
If we are successful we feel that an intermediary should always be used to help you make first contact with the person you are seeking. You have to remember that this can be an emotional time for them as well as yourself. At Tracing Your Roots we strongly recommend that you use an intermediary for this next step and whilst this is not our area of expertise, we can provide details of agencies within the UK that maybe able to offer you help and guidance through what can be a very emotional time.

How do I pay?

You can either pay by cheque or transfer the money directly to Tracing Your Roots. Payment will never be asked for if we feel there is nothing we can do for you.
